Coordination of, and technical support to, a multi-site project on Mobilising Men to Challenge Gender-based Violence in Institutions

Institute for
Development Studies, University of Sussex Global South Asia and sub- Saharan Africa

Working as a consultant for the Institute of Development Studies, I designed the Mobilising Men program, a pioneering initiative to mobilise men to challenge and change the institutional policies and cultures that enable and enact sexual and gender based violence (SGBV). With funding from UNFPA and working through local NGO partners in India, Kenya and Uganda, I am supporting the work of national partners in recruiting and training teams of both male and female activists in a diverse range of institutional settings to develop campaigns addressing SGBV.

Design and implementation of a Study into Action process for male social movement activists in New York on challenging male supremacy

Challenging Male Supremacy Project
New York City, USA

The Challenging Male Supremacy project was born of a desire to bring gender equality work with men into social movement spaces in New York City. Working with two fellow activists, I designed and then facilitated a nine month Study into Action process for a group of male social movement activists. Meeting monthly, the process explored issues of masculinity and male supremacy in relation to interlocking systems of oppression and current and potential Left movement strategies to counter such oppression. The work of the Challenging Male Supremacy project was presented at the 2010 US Social Forum in Detroit.

2001 – 2005

Training and technical support on gender and sexuality issues in HIV programming at community level

International HIV/ AIDS Alliance
Southern Africa Southeast Asia

This has included designing and piloting training workshops on “Gender and Sexuality in Men’s Lives” for community-based organizations (CBOs) in the Philippines and Zambia that receive technical/financial support from the Alliance. I strengthened the Alliance’s capacity to integrate issues of masculinity and violence into its work through initiating and editing a case study collection on HIV/AIDS work with men and researching and authoring a discussion paper on violence and HIV/ AIDS in Asia and Eastern Europe.

1999 – 2001

Training and technical support on the development of harm reduction programming

International HIV/ AIDS Alliance
South Asia Southeast Asia

I strengthened the capacity of the Alliance, at the regional and national levels, to develop harm reduction programming. This included designing and facilitating two regional consultations on expanding and enhancing HIV/AIDS prevention and care work with people who inject drugs in Asia. On the basis of these consultations, I authored the Alliance’s toolkit on “Developing HIV/AIDS work with Drug Users”.

1996 – 2001

Training and technical support on participatory approaches to HIV/AIDS program development

International HIV/ AIDS Alliance
Southern Africa South Asia Southeast Asia

provided technical support on participatory program development (needs assessment, project design, strategy implementation and project evaluation) to CBO staff in Bangladesh, Cambodia, the Philippines and the Ukraine. I authored Alliance reports on “The role of participatory community assessment in responding to HIV/ AIDS in Bangladesh, Cambodia and Sri Lanka” and “Community lessons about improving responses to HIV/AIDS.”
