Creation of training materials and curricula on men, gender and sexuality

EngenderHealth
South Africa

Through participatory workshops and toolkit development, I have created and adapted training materials and curricula on men, gender and sexuality for use in work on HIV/AIDS and sexual health more generally. I revised and expanded training curriculum used by the Master Trainers of EngenderHealth’s Men as Partners (MAP) program in South Africa to include more material on sexuality, violence, oppression and social change. Based on feedback from key stakeholders and a review workshop that I designed and facilitated, I developed a new modular format for the curriculum and coordinated the revision process, including authoring the background sections on key issues of gender, violence and HIV/AIDS. Having interviewed senior officers, trainers and recipients of the MAP program within the South African Defense Force, I also redesigned the pilot training curriculum on men, gender equality and HIV/AIDS for scaled-up implementation across the military.

International HIV/ AIDS Alliance
Southern Africa and Southeast Asia

As a consultant for the International HIV/AIDS Alliance, I partnered with the Zambia Integrated Health Program, within the Ministry of Health, and Alliance Zambia, a civil society umbrella organization, to create and pilot test a set of tools on gender, sexuality and HIV/AIDS, which have subsequently been published by the Alliance as “Keep the best change the rest: Participatory tools for working with communities on gender and sexuality”..

2006 – 2008

Use of digital media to mobilize men for the prevention of intimate violence

Generation Five
USA

Generation Five is committed to engaging more men in its work to end child sexual abuse in five generations, both as survivors of abuse themselves and as bystanders who can take action to prevent and stop such abuse. I worked with Generation Five to produce a DVD of digital stories, with accompanying discussion guide, on men’s experiences of and responses to intimate violence. I served as the lead on all stages of this men’s digital storytelling project, including facilitating the digital storytelling workshop, assisting with post-production on the digital stories, designing and creating the DVD and co-authoring the discussion guide to accompany the DVD.

2005

Documentation of promising practices in gender equality work with men on violence and HIV/AIDS

EngenderHealth
South Africa

There is an emerging body of practice on gender equality work with men on issues of HIV/AIDS and violence. In order to identify and disseminate lessons from this practice, I designed and implemented a documentation process with eight South African partners of the Men as Partners program, which included interviewing staff and beneficiaries and distilling lessons and challenges from their experience. Based on this documentation, I produced a “Promising Practices” guide for gender equality work with men that is being used by the global Men as Partners program.

2004

Design of online toolkit for engaging men and boys in violence prevention

Family Violence Prevention Fund
USA

As part of FVPF’s Building Partnerships Initiative to End Men’s Violence, I supported the development of an on-line capacity building toolkit for strengthening violence prevention work with men. Targeted at State-wide implementers of the CDC’s DELTA program for violence prevention, I documented the consultation meeting with CDC partners, developed recommendations for improvements to the toolkit and edited the contents of the toolkit on the basis of these recommendations.

1996 – 2000

Development of training and communication materials on harm reduction approaches to drug use

Harm Reduction Coalition
USA

The Harm Reduction Coalition (HRC) is the leading voice for the promotion of harm reduction approaches to drug use in the USA. I worked with HRC to expand the application of harm reduction philosophy and practice to new sectors. I developed an Introduction to Harm Reduction curriculum for criminal justice agencies in New York City and adapting the Harm Reduction Training Institute’s curriculum “An Overview of Harm Reduction Policy and Practice” for use by the New Jersey AIDS Education and Training Council. I also served as editor of “Harm Reduction Communication”, developing it as a medium for the voices of drug users in debates on drugs, HIV/AIDS and other public health and public safety issues.

International HIV/ AIDS Alliance
Global

For the International HIV/AIDS Alliance I authored a toolkit on “Developing HIV/AIDS work with Drug Users” and supported the Ukraine HIV/AIDS Alliance in developing participatory assessment tools for use with injecting drug users and training their CBO partners in the use of the tools.
